Job Description

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Project Manager to join our client’s team, leading complex engineering capital projects and programmes across the South West.

Based in Exeter with hybrid working available, this is an excellent opportunity for a Senior Project Manager with a background in engineering, utilities, infrastructure or construction, who has experience managing complex projects, significant budgets and multidisciplinary teams.

You will take a senior leadership role across major capital projects and programmes, providing direction on delivery, commercial performance, governance, risk and stakeholder management, while supporting successful outcomes across the wider project portfolio.

The Role

You will have senior-level responsibility for the delivery and performance of major engineering capital projects and programmes, working closely with Project Managers, delivery partners, commercial teams and senior stakeholders.

  • Lead complex capital projects and programmes from planning through to completion.
  • Take overall responsibility for project delivery, performance, governance and outcomes.
  • Manage significant budgets, investment plans, forecasting and financial performance.
  • Provide leadership and direction to Project Managers, delivery teams and external partners.
  • Oversee programme performance, reporting and financial controls.
  • Manage NEC contracts and commercial strategy, including early warnings, compensation events and dispute avoidance.
  • Ensure effective governance and reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Act as a senior escalation point for key project risks, issues and stakeholder concerns.
  • Champion high standards of health, safety, environmental performance and quality.
  • Support investment planning and longer-term asset and business objectives.
  • Build strong relationships with senior stakeholders, customers, regulators and leadership teams.
  • Drive lessons learned and continuous improvement across project delivery.
  • Support the development of project teams through mentoring, coaching and knowledge sharing.

About You

  • Significant experience delivering engineering, utilities, infrastructure or construction projects.
  • Proven experience managing complex capital programmes and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong commercial understanding and extensive experience with NEC contracts.
  • Experience managing significant budgets, forecasting and investment programmes.
  • Confident presenting project performance, risks and recommendations to senior leadership and governance groups.
  • Strong leadership, influencing, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proven ability to manage complex risks, competing priorities and organisational change.
  • Experience developing project teams and working effectively with contractors and supply chain partners.
  • Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management or a related discipline.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • APM PMQ, PRINCE2 Practitioner or equivalent project management qualification.
  • Extensive NEC contract management experience.
  • Ideally, Chartered Engineer (CEng), Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) or equivalent professional accreditation and programme management qualification such as MSP, PgMP or equivalent.
